5 Social Media Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)
Social media can be one of the most powerful tools a local business has, or one of the biggest time drains. The difference usually comes down to a few key mistakes that are incredibly common, and thankfully, very fixable.
Here are the five I see most often when working with businesses in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
1. Posting without a goal
The most common mistake by far. Posting just to stay active, without any clear intention behind the content. Every post should have a purpose, whether that's building awareness, driving traffic to your website, or encouraging people to book or buy. If you don't know why you're posting something, your audience won't either. Always think about three goals: Educate, Entertain, Inspire!
The fix: Before you create any piece of content, ask yourself: what do I want someone to do or feel after seeing this?
2. Talking only about your products or services
Nobody follows a business account to be sold to constantly. If every post is a promotion, people will tune out or unfollow. The businesses that build real communities online are the ones that give value first , tips, behind the scenes, local knowledge, relatable moments.
The fix: Follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should educate, entertain or inspire. Only 20% should be directly promotional.
3. Inconsistent posting
Posting five times one week and then disappearing for three weeks sends a confusing signal, both to your audience and to the algorithm. Consistency builds trust. It tells people you're active, reliable and worth following.
The fix: It's better to post twice a week consistently than five times one week and nothing the next. Find a rhythm you can actually maintain.
4. Ignoring local content opportunities
Birmingham has a huge, proud local identity. Brum businesses that tap into that, referencing local events, neighbourhoods, landmarks or community moments , tend to get far more engagement than those posting generic content. People here connect with businesses that feel genuinely local. Remember that people love to connect with other people.
The fix: Look at what's happening in Birmingham each month and think about how your business can connect to it authentically. It doesn't have to be forced, even small nods to the local community go a long way.
5. No clear call to action
You write a great caption, post a good photo, and then... nothing. No direction for what the person should do next. A call to action doesn't have to be pushy, it can be as simple as "drop a comment below", "visit the link in bio" or "send us a message to find out more."
The fix: End every post with one clear, simple next step.
Final thought
Most of these mistakes don't come from lack of effort , they come from not having a clear strategy. If any of these sound familiar, the good news is they're all very fixable with a bit of planning.
